Maya artist
This whistling vessel was made by one or more Maya artists in what is now Guatemala or Mexico, between 400 and 500 CE. Their names are not known.
It is a ceramic container with a lid, also known as the Double-Chambered Vessel. Its imagery includes a man, a bird and a mythical creature. It stands 30.2 centimeters high, 19.7 centimeters wide and 13.3 centimeters deep (11 7/8 by 7 3/4 by 5 1/4 inches).
Nelson A. Rockefeller gave the vessel to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1963 (accession number 1978.412.90a, b). It is part of the Michael C. Rockefeller Memorial Collection and belongs to the museum’s Michael C. Rockefeller Wing in New York.
