Chuquibamba weaver

The weaver of the tunic shown here, a Chuquibamba artist, is not known by name. The tunic was woven in Peru between 1460 and 1540, from the late fifteenth century into the early sixteenth, and is an Inca work.

The tunic is a woven garment made from two fibers, camelid hair and cotton. It is 29 3/4 inches wide and 37 inches high (75.6 by 94 centimeters).

George D. Pratt gave the tunic to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 1933 (accession number 33.149.100). It is one of the woven textiles in the museum’s Michael C. Rockefeller Wing.
